School workshops

FAQS

What do we offer?

We offer 60MIN dance workshops to primary schools! Workshops involve either a Hip-Hop class or a Jazz Class and blend dancing and dance history learning into one fun session!

Students will be able to learn technique and dance phrases within the selected style, whilst also learning about the history behind the movement.

Our sessions aim to engage students in collaborative conversation about dance history, giving us insight into what they know and sharing some of our knowledge with them!

Is it free?

Yes! These sessions are completely free of charge. We see this as a collaborative effort, which we benefit from too!

We use these sessions as part of our research into Dance experiences in the Lewisham Borough, by gathering data on what local young people know/think about dance through observation and conversation within sessions.

What do we ask from schools?

We ask schools to get involved in adding to our research data by asking students to answer questionnaires which involve more specific research questions. This would happen outside of our session but would build on the conversations that we open up in our workshops.

This would be voluntary, but very beneficial to our project! Other schools' contributions have been so amazing and really helped our research grow!

This would also be an opportunity for students to artistically reflect and help to build the content of our 2023 community festival which will explore the findings of this research.

How can your school be involved in this project long term?

If your students enjoy these sessions (which we think they will!), then there are ways for students and schools to be involved with our project on a long-term basis!

We want to set up an ongoing relationship with local schools and provide fun dance opportunities for students! We are open to conversations about how this might work and what your school would benefit from. Other schools have invited us back to run regular classes, visit sister sites, or kept in touch to hear about upcoming events their students can attend.

Our biggest hope is that we can invite your schools' students to attend our dance history festival- taking place next spring/summer in Deptford. This festival will grow directly out of these workshops and this research. Students who attend will see how their ideas/ stories have grown and shaped the event! You can find out more about this fun community-based festival here.

Are we DBS checked?

Yes, all of our teachers are DBS checked and have lots of experience of working with children and teaching dance.

We are able to provide our DBS certificates to schools prior to the sessions taking place.

We always run sessions with a teacher and a teaching assistant.

What class sizes do we accept?

We are able to teach classes with a maximum size of 30 students.

Which years do we work with?

We have experience teaching both KS1 and KS2 students and are more than happy to teach any year groups!

What school facilities would we need?

For our dance classes we will need access to a school hall, or an open space which is safe for moving, free of obstacles, and has sturdy but not-too-hard flooring (as many of our classes involve floorwork).

We provide our own speaker system but will need access to a power outlet.

How many sessions can your school take part in?

Due to our team's busy schedule, sustainability, and our target to provide free sessions for as many local schools as possible we are only able to offer two free sessions per school at this time.

We hope that as we continue to grow our work, our team, and our funding we will be able to expand this.

Continued classes

Beyond our research workshops we also offer fun dance classes for local schools for a fee. If your students really enjoy our sessions and your school would like us to run further sessions, we would love to! Just drop us an email, we are understanding of budget issues and flexible on price!
